Honestly, I think Wikipedia is a great source of information and I have been using it as a homework/paper writing/fact learning guide since I was a freshman in high school. I think that most teachers over react when they don't let their students use it because they say a lot of pages have false information. I really don't agree with that though because whenever I use Wikipedia, their information is almost always the same as another website's. There are also editors that go in and delete the facts that are false! So I believe as a student and a future teacher that Wikipedia is a blessing.
As a future teacher, I would encourage my students to use Wikipedia because I believe that is truly is a great source of information.

ReplyDeleteI do not think you are alone here and I believe that a lot of students use Wikipedia this way. To me, that is why as teachers, we need to help our students understand what it is, what it is good for and what it is not good for. Great entry! CB
I do agree with you as well. I believe that some teachers tend to over react with their students using Wikipedia as finding some information. But the students need to be cautious about it.

I think it's great you have found Wikipedia as a reliable source. However, I would maybe consider having your students provide another reliable source in support of their Wikipedia source. When I was in high school, we did a Wikipedia project. We were given topics and we had to search through Wikipedia to gather information on the topic and then find other sources in support of our Wiki sources. I found many mistakes that Wiki offered as true or fact. I do not believe Wikipedia should be banned, but I do believe there should be sources to back the Wiki information up to ensure it is true and not misleading.
